Plane BBQ
Plane BBQ is a free game with no ads, no purchases and no tracking. Your leaderboard name, times and van paint are public to other players. Our gameplay statistics and crash reports carry a random ID for your app install. They are never tied to your name or your leaderboard entry.
- We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and the app does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission.
- Your player name, best run times and van paint are shown to other players on the leaderboard.
- Players can report a name or paint and can block other players. We review reports within 24 hours.
- We collect gameplay statistics and crash and performance reports. They carry a random install ID that the app creates. That ID is not your name, your Apple ID or your leaderboard profile, and you can ask us to delete everything sent under it.
- Your progress syncs through your own private iCloud. We cannot read it.
- Your location is used on your device to draw the map. It is never sent to us.
1. What we collect
1.1 Leaderboard (public to other players)
When you finish a delivery, the app sends to our server (bain.ryanglosson.com, run by Switchabook LLC):
- a random player ID the app generates (not your Apple ID, not your real name)
- the display name you chose
- your run time, the route and the app version
- your van paint, as colors and as an image of the paint you drew
- a random per-install secret the app keeps in your device's Keychain and sends with leaderboard writes, so that only your install can change your entry. It is a credential, not information about you.
Other players can see your display name, your rank, your time and your van paint. This is the one place anything you create is shown to strangers. Like any server, ours also receives your IP address with each request.
1.2 Gameplay statistics (tied to a random install ID)
As you play, the app sends gameplay statistics to our analytics server (raindrop.ryanglosson.com). It sends them when you pick an order, launch, start a drive or flight, finish one, collect coins, are paid for a delivery, buy an upgrade or paint, and move on to the next order. They contain the route and destination, the vehicle, distance, elapsed time, coins collected, earned and spent with your coin balance before and after, near misses, obstacles, the upgrades and paint you bought, your upgrade levels and their effects, the run mode, the app version and build, and for flights a sampled trace of the in-game flight path. Each finished drive and flight also reports how smoothly the game ran: the average frame rate, how many frames were slow and the slowest one, your iPhone model identifier (for example iPhone15,2), and whether the phone was running hot at the start and end.
From version 1.0.3, each finished drive also reports a short summary of how it played: how many obstacles you hit, how many you only just missed, how many could not have been avoided, how many lane changes you made, how many coins appeared and how many you collected, how long you typically had to react to an obstacle in your lane, and how long a lane change took to settle. It also includes the drive's course number: a random number the game picks fresh for every drive to lay out the traffic and coins, so that we can replay the same course when fixing a problem. A new course number is picked for each drive, and it is not tied to your device. Each finished drive and flight also carries the performance summary described in section 1.3.
Each event carries random identifiers that the app generates itself:
- an install ID, created the first time you open the app and kept on your device. Deleting and reinstalling the app creates a new one.
- a session ID, new each time you open the app
- a delivery ID, one for each order you play
None of these is your Apple ID or Apple's advertising or vendor identifier. None is your leaderboard player ID, and we do not connect them to your leaderboard name or entry. The statistics contain no name, no location and nothing you typed or drew. You can see your install ID in the app under Settings, About, and tap it to copy it. Because this install ID stays the same on your device until you delete the app, our App Store privacy label lists these statistics, and the crash and performance reports in section 1.3, as data linked to you. We still never connect them to your name, your Apple ID or your leaderboard entry.
We use these statistics to balance and fix the game and to check that every delivery reward is paid exactly once.
1.3 Crash and performance reports
When iOS tells the app that it crashed, froze, launched slowly, or used too much CPU or disk, the app sends a report to the same analytics server. The report contains:
- the kind of problem (crash, hang, slow launch, CPU or disk overuse), its exception type and code, and its signal
- how long the hang or launch took, the CPU time used and the bytes written to disk
- the time window iOS reported, and the app version and build the problem happened in
- the iOS version, your iPhone model identifier (for example iPhone15,2) and its CPU architecture
- whether Low Power Mode was on, and whether the app is a TestFlight build
- a short code-location signature: up to 8 entries, each the name of an app or system library and an offset in it. It contains no memory contents, no addresses and no file paths.
From version 1.0.3, each finished drive and flight also includes a performance summary:
- how smoothly the game ran: the frame time it was aiming for, how many frames were on time and how many were late and by how much, the total time lost to hitches and stutters, typical and worst-case frame times, how many slow frames there were in the first few seconds, and how long the drive or flight was active
- how quickly the game responded to you: how many taps and swipes you made, and the typical, slower and slowest time from a touch to the screen updating
- memory: the most memory the game used, how close it came to the limit iOS allows, and how many memory warnings iOS sent
- heat and power: how hot the phone got, how many times that changed, and whether Low Power Mode was on at any point
If a drive or flight is closed before it finishes (for example, the app is swiped away or iOS stops it), the next time you open the app it sends one short record of that run: the app build it ran on, whether it was a drive or a flight, the vehicle tier, the route or destination, the course number for a drive, when it started and when it was last saved (to the minute), how long it had been played, whether the app was in the background, and the last performance summary from the list above.
These are summaries only: totals, counts and percentiles for a whole drive or flight. The App Store version of the app never sends a frame-by-frame recording, where you touched the screen, your battery level or any details of your network connection. None of it carries your name, your Apple ID or your leaderboard entry.
The app also reports how many statistics are waiting to send or failed to send, so that we can tell when data is missing.
All of these reports carry the same random install ID and session ID as the gameplay statistics. They contain no name, no location, no free text and nothing you typed or drew. We use them only to find and fix bugs.
1.4 Reports and blocks
If you report a player we receive your player ID, the reported player's ID, the route, the reason (name, paint or other), an optional note of up to 280 characters that you type, and the time. If you block a player we store the block (your player ID and theirs) so it follows you. We use these only for moderation.
1.5 iCloud sync
Your wallet balance, upgrade levels and profile sync through Apple's CloudKit private database for the app (iCloud.com.switchabook.planebbq). It stays in your private iCloud. Switchabook LLC cannot read it.
1.6 Location
The game asks for your location while you use the app, only to draw real Memphis streets on the map. Location is processed on your device. It is not collected, sent or stored by us.
1.7 Apple diagnostics
If you have turned on Share iPhone Analytics in iOS Settings, Apple may share crash reports with developers. This is separate from the reports in section 1.3, which the app sends itself.
1.8 Moderator devices
A device that our server confirms as a moderator may register a push notification token with the server so we can be alerted to reports. Ordinary players' devices are never asked for, and never send, a push token.
1.9 What we do not collect
No ads, no advertising identifier, no tracking or advertising SDK, no in-app purchases, no email address, contacts, photos, microphone or camera. There is no chat and no account system.
2. How we use it
- Show the leaderboard and rank your times.
- Keep the leaderboard safe: filter names, take reports, honor blocks, and hide or remove abusive entries.
- Balance and fix the game, using the gameplay statistics and the crash and performance reports.
- Check that every delivery reward is paid exactly once.
- Sync your progress across your Apple devices through iCloud.
We do not sell or rent data. We do not use it for advertising or marketing. We do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
3. Names, paint and moderation
Names and paint are public to other players. Names are checked against a filter when you submit them. Paint images are not screened automatically. Any player can:
- Report a leaderboard name or paint from the row or the full-size avatar view. We review reports within 24 hours.
- Block a player. Blocked players disappear from your leaderboard, and you can unblock them in Settings.
We can hide a name or paint, or remove a player from the leaderboard, including older entries.
4. Children
Plane BBQ is a casual game and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Players choose their own display name, and there is no chat. If you are a parent and believe your child gave us information, email ryan@bainbarbecue.com and we will delete it.
5. Retention
- Leaderboard entries (player ID, name, times, paint) are kept until you ask us to remove them or we remove them for moderation. There is no automatic expiry. Older paint image versions are cleaned up by the server automatically.
- Gameplay statistics and crash and performance reports, with their install, session and delivery IDs, are kept for 18 months and then deleted. Our database backups are kept for 14 days.
- Report and block records are kept while needed for moderation and to prevent repeat abuse.
- Server logs (including IP addresses) are kept in ordinary rotating logs for operating and securing the service.
- iCloud data follows Apple's policy. You can remove it yourself, see below.
6. Your choices and deletion
- Remove your leaderboard entry, name or paint: email ryan@bainbarbecue.com with your player name and the route. We delete or hide it and confirm by email.
- Delete your gameplay statistics and crash reports: in the app, open Settings, About, and tap Install ID to copy it. Email it to ryan@bainbarbecue.com. We delete every statistic and report sent under that install ID and confirm by email. Deleted data leaves our backups within 14 days. Please send the ID before you delete the app: a reinstall creates a new install ID, and we cannot find the old one for you. Events under an install ID you no longer have expire under the retention period above.
- Delete iCloud data: iOS Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage Account Storage, Plane BBQ, then delete the data.
- Residents of California, the EU, the UK and other regions with data protection laws can use the same email to exercise their rights.
Support and how-to steps are at ryanglosson.com/planebbq/support/.
7. Changes
We update the effective date at the top when this policy changes. Material changes will also be noted in the App Store What's New text.
